Social Doc Planning

Construction Worker | Khokana, Nepal. November 2024

Topic: Compliance with unwanted, non-coercive sexual activity

Area of study will initially focus on men aged 18-35 at this time.

Background:

  • How can this phenomena make someone feel knowing they have participated?
  • What is not spoken about and why is it hidden or masked?
  • What are the causes behind this for men?

Approach:

Considerations

Be considerate of Trauma-informed reporting guidelines. (Ref; Sexual Violence Media Guide and other documentation)

  • Recognise what has been experienced and how it may be continuing to affect them.
  • Recognise that telling their story could cause them to re-experience the original trauma and further impact them.
  • Revisiting interviews and speaking to victims may be needed once they have had time to heal but not at the cost of their emotional and physical wellbeing.
  • A trauma-informed approach should be used whether or not a victim-survivor chooses to speak to a journalist.

Be considerate of how this research and work can affect myself (vicarious trauma) and do my best to practice self care whilst working on this. (Ref; Sexual Violence Media Guide and other documentation)

  • Continuous exposure to topics can cause vicarious trauma.
  • Can have physical impacts such as headaches and fatigue.
  • Can have psychological impacts such as feeling numb, hopeless, guilty or disturbed sleep, and behavioural signs such as mood changes, withdrawal or reliance on unhealthy coping mechanisms.
  • Do best to exercise, sleep and spend time away from social media, news outlets and the internet.
  • Communicate with those around you and if needed professionals, don’t be a burden on those around you and seek help.

Conceptual Approach

  • Conceptual considerations: What is the work about? Who is present in the photographs? Does the work refer to an event in history, or a more contemporary social issue or phenomenon? What is the author's positionality or relationship to the story/community/issue? Does the work rely on factual and/or speculative ideas? Is the story clear-cut or ambiguous? How does the artist use images and information to tell the story? What knowledge has the work generated? What feelings does it activate?

Technical Approach

  • Camera: Hasselblad EL/M
  • Lenses: 50mm f4, 120mm f4, 250mm f5.6
    • 50mm = 21mm vertical FOV and 32mm Horizontal FOV
    • 120mm = 51mm vertical FOV and 76mm Horizontal FOV
    • 250mm = 106mm vertical FOV and 159mm Horizontal FOV
  • Film: ILFORD DELTA 3200, Kodak Tri-X 400, Kodak T-Max 400, Rollei Superpan 200
    • Textural nature of the grain at 3200 is really pleasing
    • Could possibly Push Process the other two to get some kind of Alternate effect too? Tri-X Pushes well up to 1600 and can be shot at 3200 in a pinch.
    • Crushing the blacks to retain highlights will likely be the approach to go with for this project as the film lends itself to overexposure better so almost underexposing will really remove any detail from the shadows.
    • Multiple exposure is possible on the EL/M so some test shots with this can be done, this could also be done with layering negatives or other printing approaches, this would allow more options in post but would involve a higher level of manipulation.
  • Shooting techniques
    • Anonymisation will feature in some way if this is through composition or distortion of subjects
    • Investigate; Plexiglass, Frosted Glass, Glass Tile, Glass Bricks, Polished Aluminium, Acrylic, Dented Reflective Materials,
  • Lighting approaches
    • High power spotlight, 5ft Octabox, Backlit with spotlight
    • Black backdrop will be ideal? Play with white more in the tests next.

Journalistic Approach

Structure of first Par

  • Description/Anecdote
  • Description/Anecdote
  • Quote/Fact
  • Quote/Fact

Australian statistics are hard to come by bit a 2023 Canadian study indicates that…

How can I link in the way that men talk to people

Men vs women and their reactions to the issue “Oh so sexual assault” or “I have a Medusa tattoo”

Is this another story? How can I incorporate data on how women react to men’s mental health and how this affects men’s ability to share their experiences and how they are doing

Challenges:

  • Presumptions and self insertion by people.
  • Lack of understanding on the scope of the topic.
  • Female vs Male connotations.
  • Finding people who are willing to be interviewed (even anonymously).
  • Anonymisation of subjects when taking photographs.

‘From normality to madness’ French photographer Antoine d’Agata on capturing the invisible pain of war in Ukraine for Jonathan Littell’s new book — Meduza
Just before Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, French-American writer Jonathan Littell and French photographer Antoine d’Agata traveled to Kyiv’s Babi Yar ravine, where the Nazis carried out one of the Holocaust’s largest massacres in September 1941. Littell and d’Agata’s goal was to document how the site of such enormous tragedy preserves its history and exists in the present day. However, Moscow’s full-scale war forced them to broaden the scope of their project to reflect a reality where war crimes are not just a horrific chapter in Ukraine’s past but a part of its daily life in the present. The resulting book, titled An Inconvenient Place, was published in French in late 2023. Now, Meduza has released its first-ever Russian-language translation. Photographer Antoine d’Agata has also undertaken other assignments in Ukraine, working for The New York Times, Le Monde, and Magnum. He even helped the Ukrainian military in Kharkiv compile a photo archive of deceased Russian soldiers for future exchanges. Meduza spoke with d’Agata about his experiences working in a war-torn country and how he maintains his ability to empathize.

Arnold Newman

Arnold Newman Portraits
Anyone that has spent any time around me would realize that I’m particularly fond of portraits. From the wonderful works of Martin Schoeller to the sublime Dan Winters, I am simply fascinated by a well executed portrait. So I thought it would be fun to take a look at some selections from the “father” of environmental portraits - Arnold Newman…

Film stock has a really nice grain structure to it. Provides enough contrast as well to work for proposed anonymisation approach. Out of focus figure or silhouette also work well for obscuring the identity of the subject.
